Pikimal today released a compilation of whiskey top tens highlighting many of the most recognized features and uses of the well-known liquor. The site combined millions of facts with user input to objectively find the best whiskeys available.
The company worked with data that utilizes rankings from the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, the Beverage Testing Institute, and Wine Enthusiasts Magazine.
Additional consideration was given to members of the Pikimal site who specify what criteria and factors relating to whiskey are most important to them. The rankings are created using a special algorithm that compares the factual data against these user preferences.
The overall winner was the Caol Ila 12yr Islay Single Malt Scotch. The runner-up was the Laphgroaig 10yr Cask Strength Islay Single Malt Scotch. And coming in third, the George T. In order to create a valid collection, over 855 whiskeys were considered and ranked based on use, region, price, quality, base ingredient, and age. In terms of quality, the number of times distilled, smoothness, flavor, and previous awards were considered. What is notable about Pikimal’s approach is that it does not restrict the site to providing only one generalized top ten, but allows for the quick generation of “best lists” based on any number of features.
Many magazines and competitions rank whiskeys to let their audience know which choices are the best, but it’s necessary for them to simplify what’s important about the liquor in order to do so. One person may only consider well-aged whiskeys in their idea of the top, while others worry more about value. This problem can only be solved by allowing users to specify the importance of criteria in order to provide relevant results. This is what Pikimal is attempting by combining factual data with user input to create customized top ten lists. These are the top whiskeys right now, but as user-preferences evolve, so do the rankings.
